kops.description.abstract	Travelogues are considered an important source in understanding how the foreign was experienced and appropriated. However, negative experiences which testify to the fact that an understanding did not succeed, often remain hidden. This becomes particularly clear when tracing the historical image of Italy.<br /><br />This article shows the examples of some unvarnished travelogues on Italy from the 18th and 19th century, which were written at the same time as a yearning attitude towards Italy was popularized by Goethe. One encountered difficult or even incomprehensible phenomena for which the familiar categories of understanding no longer applied. The gap between the two cultures was sometimes even experienced as something insurmountable. The aim is to find out where the boundaries of understanding for the foreign were and from what point exactly understanding could no longer succeed or new concepts were developed in order to turn the conf rontation with foreignness into something positive.	deu
