| dc.description.abstract | The United States of the 1950s has, at least in reductive accounts of the period, often been cast as a place and time defined largely by social and cultural conservatism, emphasis on the nuclear family, sexual repression and other trappings of "squareness". Stephens defines this "Queer Quartet" by focusing mostly on each artist's unconventional gender presentation rather than their romantic and sexual interests. | eng |
