This review article deals with one of the most recent and probably most influential surveys of modern generative grammar, van Riemsdijk and Williams (1986). While most of the chapters of the book are briefly discussed, some topics are discussed in more detail, especially the analysis of WH-movement and the theory of chain-formation. The latter has important consequences for the analysis of sentences with so-called 'parasitic gaps'. Some data from German parasitic gap constructions are shown to be problematic for the account proposed.eng
