The roots of civil law, as it evolved in Augsburg during the early modern period, lie in the high Middle Ages. In order to understand the specifics of the impe-rial city’s legal history, it is therefore necessary to move beyond the temporal framework of this volume and briefly consider these medieval origins before developments during the period from 1400 to 1800 can be properly addressed. Central to this discussion is the municipal law code of 1276, which remained the basis of legal practice well into the sixteenth century. Although it was grad-ually amended and superseded by statute law, no comprehensive revision took place until the end of Augsburg’s history as a free imperial city.eng
