Marchantia polymorpha (Marchantiaceae) is one of the most widespread liverworts in Central Europe and easy to recognize. The haploid cormus represents the persisting stage in the life cycle and is not differentiated in cauloids and phylloids. Instead it has an undifferentiated thallus. The male antheridia (producing the spermatozoids), and the female archegonia (producing only a single large egg) are inserted on special umbrella-shaped parts of the thallus: the antheridiophores and the archegoniophores. The short-lived diploid sporophyte consists only of a small seta and a capsule. The sporophytes die back after releasing the spores. Each capsule contains several 100 thousand spores all similar in size and shape (isospor). Next to the spores several elaters which are important for ballistic dispersal are developed. The morphology, anatomy and life cycle of Marchantia polymorpha will be discussed below.
