kops.description.abstractАn overview of the role of language contact in restructuring the categories of gender and inflection class of the noun in the Molise-Slavic minority language, spoken in three villages in Southern Italy. Due to the immigration of the ancestors of today’s Molise Slavs from the Dalmatian hinterland (Herzegovina) in the 16th century, Molise Slavic is “genetically” related to Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian, and Standard Croatian can serve as a point of comparison for the diachronic changes in question. Two basic changes can be observed, i. e. the loss of the neuter and the disappearance of the ancient feminine inflectional class in *i. While the first development was induced by the lack of a neuter in Italian, the loss of the class in *i language-internally allowed for a strict gender-inflection paradigm. Nevertheless, language contact has had a role in the latter case, too, as results from the redistribution of the nouns in question to the masculine or feminine gender strictly depending on the gender of the corresponding Italian nouns. On the other hand, the gender of loanwords partially depends on language-internal criteria, with certain differences in the three Molise-Slavic dialects. Specific details, like the survival of the Molise-Slavic neuter as an impersonal gender (in verbs, adverbs and adjectives), can be explained by considering data from Italian dialects.eng
