This collection of essays on Atwood's oeuvre – supplied by contributors from Canada, the US, Germany, Great Britain, and France – aims at taking full stock of the range of Atwood's accomplishments and her international impact at the height of her creative powers. Serving also as an introduction to Atwood, this volume treats Atwood's life and status as a canonical writer, her multifaceted work, and important theoretical approaches to her oeuvre. The book innovatively also includes statements on Atwood from her publishers, agents, translators, and some of her fellow writers. A selection of photographs of Atwood, several cartoons drawn by and about her, and a bibliography of books by and about Atwood round off the volume.eng

Nischik, Germany's leading Atwood critic, represents the best collective Atwood criticism that I have seen for years. Ambitious in its design, comprehensive in its coverage ... and ... impeccably edited, it is both an evaluative assessment of [Atwood's] work up to her sixtieth birthday and the scholarly community's tribute to her on that occasion." – Coral Ann Howells, Newsletter of the Margaret Atwood Society --- "Presents a superb overview of Canada's most famous living author." – S.A. Parker, Choice --- "Succeeds in presenting an accessible and comprehensive introduction to Atwood's works and her critical contexts." – Janice Fiamengo, Canadian Literature --- "An extremely valuable research tool and a magnificent hommage to an equally magnificent writer." – Marta Dvorak, Etudes Canadiennes/Canadian Studies --- "An excellent volume ... an important enrichment of Atwood scholarship." – Gordon Bölling, Anglistik --- "An invaluable resource, well organised and beautifully presented." – Heidi Slettedahl Macpherson, British Journal of Canadian Studies --- "[T]he volume [has] that special something, not least in the particular and in this context exclusively positive kind of hybridity that makes it the ideal medium for the representation of Margaret Atwood in all her facets. The unique structure of the volume and its high scholarly standards along with the simultaneous inclusion of very personal glimpses at the life and work of the author make [it] a book with enough breadth and depth to stand out among the countless books on Atwood." – Maria Löschnigg, Germanisch-Romanische Monatsschrift}
