However, the frequently asked question What is the function of glycosylation? is actually as unreasonable as the question What is the function of proteins? would be. Today, we know there is no unifying function for the carbohydrates present in glycoproteins. They rather span the complete spectrum from being relatively unimportant to being crucial for the survival of an organism. Moreover, the same glycan may have different functions at different locations on a given protein, or in different cells or developmental stages of an organism. Thus, each glycoprotein has to be studied individually in order to unravel the roles of its glycans.
