The voltage dependence of the rate constants is derived from the elementary chargetranslocations associated with the single reaction steps. Charge displacements result from movements of the sodium- or potassium-loaded binding sites, as well as from motions of polar groups in the pump molecule. If part of the transmembrane voltage drops between the alkali-ion binding sites and the aqueous solution, the binding constants become voltage-dependent. Depending on the values of the microscopic parameters, the current-voltage characteristic may assume a variety of different shapes. Saturating behaviour results when one or more voltage-independent reaction steps become rate limiting. Non-monotonic current-voltage curves exhibiting regions of negative pump conductance are predicted when, at least in one of the transitiops, charge is moved against. the direction of overall charge-translocation. The theoretical predictions are compared with recent experimental studies of voltage-dependent pump currents.</dcterms:abstract> <dcterms:bibliographicCitation>First publ. in: European Biophysics Journal 13 (1986), pp. 309-321</dcterms:bibliographicCitation> <dcterms:available rdf:datatype="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#dateTime">2011-03-24T17:30:09Z</dcterms:available> <dcterms:title>A microscopic model for the current-voltage behaviour of the Na,K-pump</dcterms:title> <dc:language>eng</dc:language> <dc:creator>Läuger, Peter</dc:creator> <dc:rights>deposit-license</dc:rights> <dcterms:hasPart rdf:resource="https://kops.uni-konstanz.de/bitstream/123456789/6920/1/A_microscopic_model_for_the_current_voltage_behaviour_of_the_Na_K_pump.pdf"/> <foaf:homepage rdf:resource="http://localhost:8080/jspui"/> <dcterms:isPartOf rdf:resource="https://kops.uni-konstanz.de/rdf/resource/123456789/28"/> <dspace:hasBitstream rdf:resource="https://kops.uni-konstanz.de/bitstream/123456789/6920/1/A_microscopic_model_for_the_current_voltage_behaviour_of_the_Na_K_pump.pdf"/> <dc:creator>Apell, Hans-Jürgen</dc:creator> <void:sparqlEndpoint rdf:resource="http://localhost/fuseki/dspace/sparql"/> <dcterms:issued>1986</dcterms:issued> <dcterms:rights rdf:resource="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.0/legalcode"/> <dc:format>application/pdf</dc:format> <dc:contributor>Apell, Hans-Jürgen</dc:contributor> <dc:contributor>Läuger, Peter</dc:contributor> <dc:date rdf:datatype="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#dateTime">2011-03-24T17:30:09Z</dc:date> <dspace:isPartOfCollection rdf:resource="https://kops.uni-konstanz.de/rdf/resource/123456789/28"/> </rdf:Description> </rdf:RDF>
