Butyrate was activated by coenzyme A (CoA) transfer from acetyl- CoA, and butyryl-CoA was oxidized to acetyl-CoA by a classical b-oxidation pathway. Acetyl-CoA was oxidized through the acetyl-CoA/carbon monoxide dehydrogenase pathway.
