The first step in the fermentation of acetylene is the hydration to form acetaldehyde. This reaction is catalyzed by the W/FeS enzyme acetylene hydratase. While the three-dimensional structure of this enzyme has been solved at high resolution (Seiffert et al., 2007), the molecular basics of the reaction mechanism remained unclear.
