A key prediction of this hypothesis is that T. gondii infections of non-feline hosts are associated with costly behavior toward T. gondii’s definitive hosts; however, this effect has not been documented in any of the parasite’s diverse wild hosts during naturally occurring interactions with felines. Here, three decades of field observations reveal that T. gondii-infected hyena cubs approach lions more closely than uninfected peers and have higher rates of lion mortality. We discuss these results in light of 1) the possibility that hyena boldness represents an extended phenotype of the parasite, and 2) alternative scenarios in which T. gondii has not undergone selection to manipulate behavior in host hyenas. Both cases remain plausible and have important ramifications for T. gondii’s impacts on host behavior and fitness in the wild.</dcterms:abstract> <dc:creator>Turner, Julie W.</dc:creator> <dspace:hasBitstream rdf:resource="https://kops.uni-konstanz.de/bitstream/123456789/56989/3/Montgomery_2-19a0svh8mvlxw6.pdf"/> <dcterms:issued>2021-12</dcterms:issued> <dc:contributor>Turner, Julie W.</dc:contributor> <dc:creator>Perng, Wei</dc:creator> <dcterms:title>Toxoplasma gondii infections are associated with costly boldness toward felids in a wild host</dcterms:title> <dc:contributor>Soboll Hussey, Gisela</dc:contributor> <foaf:homepage rdf:resource="http://localhost:8080/jspui"/> <dc:creator>Soboll Hussey, Gisela</dc:creator> <dc:creator>Weber, Patty Sue D.</dc:creator> <dc:rights>Attribution 4.0 International</dc:rights> <dcterms:hasPart rdf:resource="https://kops.uni-konstanz.de/bitstream/123456789/56989/3/Montgomery_2-19a0svh8mvlxw6.pdf"/> <dc:contributor>Weber, Patty Sue D.</dc:contributor> <dc:contributor>Pioon, Malit O.</dc:contributor> <dc:creator>Gering, Eben</dc:creator> <bibo:uri rdf:resource="https://kops.uni-konstanz.de/handle/123456789/56989"/> <dspace:isPartOfCollection rdf:resource="https://kops.uni-konstanz.de/rdf/resource/123456789/28"/> <dc:creator>Holekamp, Kay E.</dc:creator> <dcterms:isPartOf rdf:resource="https://kops.uni-konstanz.de/rdf/resource/123456789/28"/> <dc:contributor>Perng, Wei</dc:contributor> <dc:contributor>Laubach, Zachary M.</dc:contributor> <dc:contributor>Holekamp, Kay E.</dc:contributor> <dc:language>eng</dc:language> <dc:contributor>Gering, Eben</dc:contributor> <dc:contributor>Montgomery, Tracy M.</dc:contributor> <dcterms:available rdf:datatype="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#dateTime">2022-03-24T14:57:44Z</dcterms:available> <void:sparqlEndpoint rdf:resource="http://localhost/fuseki/dspace/sparql"/> <dc:creator>Montgomery, Tracy M.</dc:creator> <dc:date rdf:datatype="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#dateTime">2022-03-24T14:57:44Z</dc:date> </rdf:Description> </rdf:RDF>
