The concept of world population has figured prominently in discussionabout the limits of natural resources in the 1960s and 1970s. Most notably, GarrettHardin’s influential article The Tragedy of the Commons, published in 1968, setthe stage for persistent and controversial discussions which framed concepts ofglobal commons by connecting demography, resources, interventionist devel-opment policies and moral debates about ‘appropriate’ living standards. Thechapter approaches the global commons through the lens of a critical historyof knowledge. By contextualising the global commons within the frameworkof game theory and human ecology as developed by the developmental biolo-gist Paul Ehrlich, it uncovers the mechanisms with which world population wasconstrued as an epistemological problem. The chapter argues that the globalcommons served as means to translate this particular scientific discourse intopolitical practice.
