Following from both assertions, it was hypothesized that students show few coping activities when experiencing academic boredom, or use coping strategies that are not beneficial for learning and achievement outcomes. In line with our assumptions, data collected from 50 university students and 50 students visiting a nursing school through experience sampling methods showed subjective well-being to not be strongly affected by students' boredom levels. Two further qualitative studies (interviews, questionnaires) on 9th grade school students (N = 50/69/42 in high/intermediate/low class tracks) support our hypotheses such that the classes in which students experienced high academic boredom were rated as low in subjective importance. Consistent with our assumptions, students with greater boredom used avoidance coping strategies (mental or behavioural escape) that are not beneficial or learning and achievement.
