Most of the clinical signs of DS are typical of the aging process including dysregulation of immune system. Beyond the causative genetic defect, DS persons display epigenetic alterations, particularly aberrant DNA methylation patterns that can contribute to the heterogeneity of the disease. In the present work, we investigated the levels of 5-hydroxymethylcytosine and of the Ten-eleven translocation dioxygenase enzymes, which are involved in DNA demethylation processes and are often deregulated in pathological conditions as well as in aging. Analyses were carried out on peripheral blood mononuclear cells of DS volunteers enrolled in the context of the MARK-AGE study, a large-scale cross-sectional population study with subjects representing the general population in eight European countries. We observed a decrease in 5-hydroxymethylcytosine, TET1, and other components of the DNA methylation/demethylation machinery in DS subjects, indicating that aberrant DNA methylation patterns in DS, which may have consequences on the transcriptional status of immune cells, may be due to a global disturbance of methylation control in DS.</dcterms:abstract> <dc:language>eng</dc:language> <dc:contributor>Ciccarone, Fabio</dc:contributor> <dc:contributor>Bacalini, Maria Giulia</dc:contributor> <dc:creator>Calabrese, Roberta</dc:creator> <dc:creator>Malavolta, Marco</dc:creator> <dc:creator>Zampieri, Michele</dc:creator> <void:sparqlEndpoint rdf:resource="http://localhost/fuseki/dspace/sparql"/> <dc:contributor>Valentini, Elisabetta</dc:contributor> <dc:creator>Ciccarone, Fabio</dc:creator> <dc:contributor>Bürkle, Alexander</dc:contributor> <dcterms:title>DNA Hydroxymethylation Levels Are Altered in Blood Cells From Down Syndrome Persons Enrolled in the MARK-AGE Project</dcterms:title> <dc:creator>Valentini, Elisabetta</dc:creator> <dc:contributor>Guastafierro, Tiziana</dc:contributor> <dcterms:isPartOf rdf:resource="https://kops.uni-konstanz.de/rdf/resource/123456789/28"/> <bibo:uri rdf:resource="https://kops.uni-konstanz.de/handle/123456789/44721"/> <dc:date rdf:datatype="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#dateTime">2019-01-24T13:54:40Z</dc:date> <dc:contributor>Reale, Anna</dc:contributor> <dspace:hasBitstream rdf:resource="https://kops.uni-konstanz.de/bitstream/123456789/44721/1/Ciccarone_2-1glhzjfxr6urx2.pdf"/> <dc:creator>Bacalini, Maria Giulia</dc:creator> <dc:creator>Bürkle, Alexander</dc:creator> <dc:contributor>Zampieri, Michele</dc:contributor> <dcterms:hasPart rdf:resource="https://kops.uni-konstanz.de/bitstream/123456789/44721/1/Ciccarone_2-1glhzjfxr6urx2.pdf"/> <dc:contributor>Calabrese, Roberta</dc:contributor> <dc:rights>Attribution 4.0 International</dc:rights> <dc:creator>Reale, Anna</dc:creator> <dc:contributor>Moreno-Villanueva, Maria</dc:contributor> <dc:creator>Guastafierro, Tiziana</dc:creator> <foaf:homepage rdf:resource="http://localhost:8080/jspui"/> <dc:contributor>Malavolta, Marco</dc:contributor> <dcterms:available rdf:datatype="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#dateTime">2019-01-24T13:54:40Z</dcterms:available> </rdf:Description> </rdf:RDF>
