In this paperl, we make an attempt to arrive at a more precise understanding of light verbs by combining syntactic and semantic considerations, and showing that light verbs have to be considered as a class in their own right. Our claim is that a particular combination of syntactic and semantic properties can be identified that characterizes light verbs. While we principally consider both V+ N and V+ V light verb constructions, this paper predomin-antly centers on the analysis of the latter.
