The main weakness of concrete is the lack of elasticity and poor flexural strength considerably limiting its potential, making reinforcing steel constructions necessary. Although the prop erties of C-S-H could be significantly improved in organic hybrids, the full potential of this approach could not be re ached because of the random C-S-H nanoplatelet structure. Taking inspiration from a sea urchin spine with highly ordere d nanoparticles in the biomineral mesocrystal, we report a bioinspired route toward a C-S-H mesocrystal with highly aligned C-S-H nanoplatelets interspaced with a polymeric binder. A material with a bending strength similar to nacre is obtained, outperforming all C-S-H – based materials known to date. This strategy could greatly benefit future cons truction processes because fracture toughness and elas- ticity of brittle cementitious materials can be largely enhanced on the nanoscale.</dcterms:abstract> <dc:creator>Labbez, Christophe</dc:creator> <void:sparqlEndpoint rdf:resource="http://localhost/fuseki/dspace/sparql"/> <dc:creator>Bill, Joachim</dc:creator> <dc:contributor>Picker, Andreas</dc:contributor> <dcterms:available rdf:datatype="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#dateTime">2017-12-05T12:38:17Z</dcterms:available> <bibo:uri rdf:resource="https://kops.uni-konstanz.de/handle/123456789/40838"/> <dc:creator>Zlotnikov, Igor</dc:creator> <dc:rights>Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International</dc:rights> <dc:creator>Nicoleau, Luc</dc:creator> <dcterms:title>Mesocrystalline calcium silicate hydrate : a bioinspired route toward elastic concrete materials</dcterms:title> <dc:language>eng</dc:language> <dc:contributor>Nicoleau, Luc</dc:contributor> <dspace:hasBitstream rdf:resource="https://kops.uni-konstanz.de/bitstream/123456789/40838/3/Picker_2-1rwqhz5jyvt5x7.pdf"/> <dc:contributor>Zlotnikov, Igor</dc:contributor> </rdf:Description> </rdf:RDF>
