Nevertheless, there exist multiple pathways under the control of yet unpredictable kinetic factors, which significantly hinder the mechanistic understanding. Herein, the mechanistic study of polymer-controlled precipitation of a typical drug compound, indomethacin, was performed. The presence of a nonionic additive poly(vinylpyrrolidone) induces the heterogeneous nucleation of networks of dumbbell-shaped crystalline microspheres on amorphous precursor domains, which is an emerging pathway in polymer-controlled crystallization. This pathway is also verified in the precipitation of l-histidine in the presence of poly(acrylic acid) in the current study. As a comparison, the presence of a cationic polymeric additive, branched polyethylenimine, promotes the formation of aggregates of amorphous nanoparticles and the subsequent crystallization of a spherical-shaped microsphere on each aggregate, a pathway in line with those in numerous studies of polymer-controlled crystallization of inorganic compounds. Our results suggest that the heterogeneous crystallization of microspheres on the amorphous precursor domains could be a specific pathway occurring in polymer-controlled precipitation of organic compounds mainly due to the fast kinetics of the precipitation process. In short, our study broadens our understanding of polymer-controlled crystallization of functional organic crystals.</dcterms:abstract> <dc:creator>Liu, Xiang Yang</dc:creator> <dc:creator>Cölfen, Helmut</dc:creator> <dc:contributor>Hou, Zhenqing</dc:contributor> <dc:contributor>Huang, Yu</dc:contributor> <dc:creator>Yang, Xiangrui</dc:creator> <dc:creator>Jiang, Yuan</dc:creator> <bibo:uri rdf:resource="https://kops.uni-konstanz.de/handle/123456789/33621"/> <dc:contributor>Liu, Xiang Yang</dc:contributor> <dcterms:title>Direct Growth of Microspheres on Amorphous Precursor Domains in Polymer-Controlled Crystallization of Indomethacin</dcterms:title> <dc:contributor>Yang, Xiangrui</dc:contributor> <dcterms:isPartOf rdf:resource="https://kops.uni-konstanz.de/rdf/resource/123456789/29"/> <dspace:isPartOfCollection rdf:resource="https://kops.uni-konstanz.de/rdf/resource/123456789/29"/> <dc:creator>Hou, Zhenqing</dc:creator> <dc:creator>Zhan, Da</dc:creator> <dc:contributor>Jiang, Yuan</dc:contributor> <dc:language>eng</dc:language> <dc:contributor>Cölfen, Helmut</dc:contributor> <dc:contributor>Ren, Yue</dc:contributor> <dc:date rdf:datatype="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#dateTime">2016-04-20T07:00:50Z</dc:date> <dcterms:issued>2016-03-02</dcterms:issued> <foaf:homepage rdf:resource="http://localhost:8080/jspui"/> <dc:creator>Ren, Yue</dc:creator> <dcterms:available rdf:datatype="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#dateTime">2016-04-20T07:00:50Z</dcterms:available> <dc:contributor>Zhan, Da</dc:contributor> <void:sparqlEndpoint rdf:resource="http://localhost/fuseki/dspace/sparql"/> <dc:creator>Huang, Yu</dc:creator> </rdf:Description> </rdf:RDF>
