The chapter includes a discussion on the synthesis and properties of chalcogenoaldehyde and -ketone complexes. The coverage is essentially limited to mono- and binuclear complexes with R1 (R2) C = E ligands (R1, R2 = H, alkyl, aryl, and alkenyl). The chapter describes the stabilization of the heteroaldehydes and -ketones by coordination to transition metals. These heteroaldehydes and heteroketones are generated in solution in the presence of suitable substrates, and are immediately trapped. It also highlights the synthesis, properties, and reactivity of thioaldehydes and thioketones. Many problems connected with the high reactivity of these heterocarbonyl compounds can be circumvented, using their transition metal complexes.
