We present a robust method that identifies sharp features in a point cloud by returning a set of smooth curves aligned along the edges. Our feature extraction is a multi-step refinement method that leverages the concept of Robust Moving Least Squares to locally fit surfaces to potential features. Using Newton's method, we project points to the intersections of multiple surfaces then grow polylines through the projected cloud. After resolving gaps, connecting corners, and relaxing the results, the algorithm returns a set of complete and smooth curves that define the features. We demonstrate the benefits of our method with two applications: surface meshing and point-based geometry compression.</dcterms:abstract> <dspace:hasBitstream rdf:resource=""/> <dcterms:isPartOf rdf:resource=""/> <dc:language>eng</dc:language> <dc:date rdf:datatype="">2013-06-12T07:05:34Z</dc:date> <dcterms:rights rdf:resource=""/> <dcterms:hasPart rdf:resource=""/> <dc:creator>Silva, Cláudio T.</dc:creator> <foaf:homepage rdf:resource="http://localhost:8080/jspui"/> <void:sparqlEndpoint rdf:resource="http://localhost/fuseki/dspace/sparql"/> <dc:contributor>Silva, Cláudio T.</dc:contributor> <dc:rights>terms-of-use</dc:rights> <dspace:isPartOfCollection rdf:resource=""/> <dc:contributor>Daniels, Joel</dc:contributor> <dc:creator>Daniels, Joel</dc:creator> <dc:contributor>Ha, Linh K.</dc:contributor> <dc:creator>Ochotta, Tilo</dc:creator> <bibo:uri rdf:resource=""/> <dcterms:title>Robust smooth feature extraction from point clouds</dcterms:title> <dc:contributor>Ochotta, Tilo</dc:contributor> <dcterms:bibliographicCitation>IEEE International Conference on Shape Modeling and Applications, 2007 : SMI '07 ; 13 - 15 June 2007, Lyon, France / in cooperation with ACM SIGGRAPH... . - Los Alamitos, Calif.
