Summary: |
There is a longstanding tradition of narratives about New York City that begins with the emergence of American short prose in the 19th century. The present anthology pays tribute to this tradition by including not only contemporary stories but also narratives written in the 19th and early 20th century. It presents a cross-section of styles mirroring the historic development of the American narrative tradition. Thematically, the stories paint a colourful picture of the pulsating New York City life, praising the positive aspects of this metropolis but also raising questions about problematic issues. The stories thus reflect the essence of this mythic city, the embodiment of exciting uniqueness and of miraculous, contradictory life itself. The book includes an analytic survey of New York fiction as well as comments on the authors and stories included. [stories in English, analyses in German]

Extracts from Reviews:
