Experiment 1 (N = 42) introduced a newly developed paradigm for inducing difficulty-related failure in an achievement context, assessing its effects on subjective control ratings. Experiment 2 (N = 47) investigated subsequent effects on behavior and cognitions in social vs. non-social risky situations. Results validated the paradigm’s adequacy for inducing failure and showed significant group differences regarding subjective control ratings (Experiment 1). Additionally, experimentally induced failure decreased risk-taking behavior in a non-social, but tended to increase trust in a risky social situation (Experiment 2).
