However, chronic or traumatic stress leads to structural and functional alterations in the traumatized brain. We argue for a building-block effect: Exposure to different types of traumatic events increases the probability of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), via incremental enlargement of a fear network. We summarize evidence of brain changes in PTSD, including recent results from research on animal models of stress-related neuroplastic remodeling, with an emphasis on structural and functional changes in the hippocampus, the amygdala, and the medial prefrontal cortex.</dcterms:abstract> <dc:creator>Elbert, Thomas</dc:creator> <dcterms:title>Structural and functional neuroplasticity in relation to traumatic stress</dcterms:title> <dcterms:available rdf:datatype="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#dateTime">2011-03-25T09:26:33Z</dcterms:available> <dc:contributor>Kolassa, Iris-Tatjana</dc:contributor> <dcterms:bibliographicCitation>First publ. in: Current Directions in Psychological Science 16 (2007), 6, pp. 321-325</dcterms:bibliographicCitation> <dc:contributor>Elbert, Thomas</dc:contributor> <dc:creator>Kolassa, Iris-Tatjana</dc:creator> <dc:date rdf:datatype="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#dateTime">2011-03-25T09:26:33Z</dc:date> <dcterms:issued>2007</dcterms:issued> <dcterms:rights rdf:resource="http://nbn-resolving.org/urn:nbn:de:bsz:352-20140905103416863-3868037-7"/> <dc:language>eng</dc:language> <dc:format>application/pdf</dc:format> </rdf:Description> </rdf:RDF>
