Religious literature gives great importance to the conversio-motif because the narration of the conversion of heathens proves God’s power, thus demonstrating the superiority of Christianity; however, in medieval heroic epic poetry, this theme is significantly less central. Although the latter recounts numerous fights against the heathens, the enemies are mostly slain and only infrequently proselytized. This article contributes to exploring why these attempts at conversion are generally violent, showing that the conversions in heroic epics obey a different narrative coding: They are merely a superficial expression of different relations of domination and power, without implying a religious change of mind. Ulrich von Türheim’s Rennewart is the best example, and it can be also observed in the legend-like accounts centered in Oswald and Orendel, although the conversio-motif in a structurally important passage of Oswald allows other interpretations.
