This paper discusses the notion of testimony in the case of transmission of knowledge, both in the case o expert knowledge and in the case of witnessing historical events. These terms are not entirely different concepts of testimony. Nevertheless, in order to do justice to the specific difficulties and questions associated with them, it is necessary to apply the concepts of first-, second-, and third-person perspective from philosophy of mind. This step also permits us to resolve the inherent tension between a social epistemological approach in the transmission of knowledge in which testimony is a key term and an approach focusing on the giving testimony, whose starting point is primarily subjective, irrespective of whether one adheres to a reductive or an anti-reductive theory of testimony. What is revealed thereby as well is the importance of understanding the witness and their body both as having been part of an historical event and as being part of the processof witnessing itself.
