Abstract
All great apes (Hominidae) make nests. These sleeping platforms are similarly constructed, despite species' differences in habitat and social organization. However, these simple shelters vary, not only across but also within great ape species. Nests serve mainly for rest but also have other purposes. Nest-building in great apes ranges from simple to more sophisticated constructions. Proposed hypotheses for the origin, evolution, and persistence of nest-building include functions such as comfort, thermoregulation, and predator and disease vector avoidance, plus sleep improvement with resulting memory consolidation. Nests remain visible for months, and remnants of basic construction sometimes persist for decades. They are useful to other disciplines such as paleoanthropology, where they aid the reconstruction of early hominin behavior, and wildlife conservation, where they allow estimates of great ape distribution and abundance.
