Abstract
This paper gives overview over the travels and works of the German explorer Heinrich Barth (1821-1855), who traveled in the 1850s through the Sahara and the Chad-Region and who reached Timbuctoo as one of the first Europeans ever. Barth was the only participant of his expedition (an expedition which was sent out by the Royal Geographical Society in London) who made his way back home. The aim of this work is to investigate if Barth was - as modern writers use to describe him - an unprejudiced observer of the African culture. How did Barth react when meeting members of indigenous peoples and how did he treat his African servants? Was he - as he continuously emphasizes - indebted to science or is there evidence in his work that speaks against that?
