The introduction to this special issue highlights that the current politicization of questions and approaches in postcolonial, queer-feminist, or environmental historical research, as well as the debate surrounding the so-called presentism, fundamentally address a core issue of modern historiography—the well-known limitations of value- neutral historical work. However, the academic activism of today is characterized by four distinct conditions: first, the political urgency of the polycrisis; second, the development of an activist scholarship-approach within the academic field; third, the transformation of the public sphere though digitalisation; and fourth, the embedding of these dynamics within debates along identity politics. This introduction examines the scope and relevance of these developments for the work of historians.
