Zusammenfassung

Schwellentexte der Weltliteratur aims at presenting outstanding texts of world literature, texts that mark thresholds in cultural history and reflect this change in their representations. The contributors examine cultural threshold phenomena in texts and their historical contexts, encompassing antiquity as well as the Middle Ages, Romanticism, and the modern and postmodern eras. Ranging from the Bible to Rushdie's Satanic Verses, the contributions provide in-depth analyses of the ways in which threshold texts write history. Examining these texts helps shed light on such fundamental matters as the relationship between literature and society, the mechanisms and functions of canon formation, and the connection between text and historical change.
