| dc.description.abstract | On considère généralement que c’est dans la cité tardo-médiévale que serait né le souci du Bien Commun, et que c’est là qu’un esprit civique aurait émergé, dans une forme spécifiquement pré-moderne, jusqu’à constituer une sorte de religion civique. Mais ces théories rebattues se vérifient-elles en pratique ? Le lien qui unissait les bourgeois à la communauté urbaine était-il vraiment aussi étroit que cela ? L’«esprit civique» n’est-il pas plutôt le produit de l’imagination des historiens au tournant du XXe siècle, et constamment répété depuis ? Ces questions sont au cœur du présent article. | fra |

These had a distinctly pre-modern form and became a type of civil religion. However, do such oft-cited theories hold up in practice? Was the bond between citizens and the urban community really that close? Is the "civic mindset" not the product of the imaginations of early 20th-century historians that has been constantly repeated ever since? This paper attempts to answer these questions. | eng |
