Stifter's Haidedorf (1840/1847) is a text characterized by omissions. It tells the story of a dreamy young man growing up in a rural environment who one day decides to leave his parents and travel abroad. When he returns many years later in order to settle in his native village, it turns out that his voyage had led him to the Orient and that he has meanwhile become an influential man with good ties to the country's ruling dynasty. At the time when Stifter wrote Das Haidedorf, he was living in Vienna and had close relations to Austria's diplomatic corps. The article makes two arguments: First, Stifter's text can be read as a counter-narrative to the life stories of high-ranked diplomats faced with the so-called ,Oriental question'. Second, Stifter displaces the 'Orient' - topically the origin of poetry - and relocates it in rural Austria. He thus establishes a poetics of the province based on a circular movement.
