Zusammenfassung
Rivers are not only material objects situated within geographical spaces. They actively contribute to the constitution of those spaces. The concept of ‘flowing spaces’ refers to the notion that rivers create economic, social, political, and cultural spaces while maintaining these spaces and their associated infrastructures, ideas, and projections in a state of “mobility” or “fluidity” through their inherent dynamics. Rivers should therefore not be regarded as passive landscape elements but as active agents and generators of dynamics that would otherwise not occur. This special issue examines such river dynamics from historical and transdisciplinary perspectives, exploring interactions between river spaces and the environment, technology, and art.
