Abstract
In this paper, we discuss the semantic contribution and discourse effect of “conditional denn,” the occurrence of the German discourse particle denn in the antecedent of a conditional. We show that its presence signals that the speaker calls into question the validity of the antecedent proposition. For the use of conditional denn to be acceptable, this proposition must have been in the set of public commitments of a discourse participant as well as be in a particular relation with a previously uttered proposition.
