Zusammenfassung

This is the first book in English that deals with the development of both English-Canadian and French-Canadian literature in a balanced manner. The volume draws on the expertise of scholars from Canada, Germany, Austria, and France, tracing literature in Canada from the indigenous oral tradition to the development of English-Canadian and French-Canadian literature through the centuries into the 21st century. Conceiving of Canada as a single but multi-faceted culture, the volume accounts for specific characteristics of English-Canadian and French-Canadian literature, such as the role of the short story in English Canada or that of the chanson in French Canada. Yet special attention is also paid to Aboriginal literature and to the ethnically diverse character of much of contemporary literature written in Canada.
