Zusammenfassung
The grotesque "Goethe schtirbt" by the Austrian writer Thomas Bernhard represents his guest contribution on the occasion of the 150th Anniversary of the death of Johann Wolfgang Goethe. It has been originally published in 1982 in the German newspaper Zeit. Bernhard’s fictional compaction dispenses firmly with the traditional necrological enactment of auratic portrayal, and depicts instead an absurd thought experiment around cultural knowledge and memorial culture. At the core of this anti-narrative lies the scenario of a historic visit (and its failure), inasmuch as the greatest wish of the moribund Goethe is to meet personally no other than Wittgenstein, his „philosophical son, so to speak“. This essay seeks to investigate the literary strategies that Thomas Bernhard has developed for assembling anachronistic manipulations and fictions of hospitality. Next, it closely examines the major difference to historical fiction, and finally, it adresses the impact of Bernhard’s anti-obituary on the interpretation of the text.
