Zusammenfassung

The study aims to analyze cultural similarities and differences in mothers' and their preschool children's reactions in a disappointment paradigm. Children's emotional reactions, strategies of emotion regulation (emotion focus, distraction), and maternal parenting behaviour were observed in German and in Indian dyads. The results showed significant cultural differences in the mothers' reactions to negative emotions of their children, cultural and gender differences in children's emotional reactions after frustration, and some culture-specific associations among maternal and children's regulatory strategies. The results are discussed with respect to cultural conditions in the development of social competence.
