Zusammenfassung

Since the 70th of the last century the analysis of student drop out was a focal theme in the US-American Sociology of Education. In this contribution the connection between individual and institutional reasons for droping out is surveyed by means of multi level models. As a result, the willingness to drop out from higher education can not be explained by the level of ability or social stress, but by a lacking commitment to the study in general and the field of study specifically. The institutional influence on the readiness to drop out is small and limited to the teaching quality of the field of study.

Zusammenfassung in einer weiteren Sprache

Seit den 70er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts stellt die Erforschung der Ursachen des Studienabbruchs, insbesondere in der US-amerikanischen Bildungssoziologie und Hochschulsozialisationsforschung, ein zentrales Thema dar. In diesem Beitrag wird der Zusammenhang zwischen institutionellen und individuellen Faktoren bezüglich der Studienabbruchsneigung mithilfe von Mehrebenenmodellen untersucht. Im Ergebnis stellt sich die Erwägung eines Studienabbruchs nicht als Fähigkeits- oder Belastungsproblem, sondern als mangelndes Commitment hinsichtlich des Studiums generell und des Studienfachs im Speziellen dar. Der institutionelle Einfluss auf die Studienabbruchsneigung ist dabei gering und reduziert sich auf die didaktische Lehrqualität des jeweiligen Faches.
