Zusammenfassung

In Engendering Genre, renowned Margaret Atwood scholar Reingard M. Nischik reveals the relationship between gender and genre in Atwood s works. The author approaches Atwood s oeuvre by genre poetry, short stories, novels, criticism and examines them individually. She explores how gender issues influence each of them and how Atwood has developed these genres to be gender-sensitive in both their content and form. She argues that gender and genre are inherently complicit in Atwood s work: they converge to critique the intrinsically gender-biased designs of traditional genres. This combination of gender and genre results in the recognizable Atwoodian style that blurs and blends the boundaries of conventional genres, exploring them in new ways.

Highly recommended.” – A.M. Laflen, Choice --- “Nischik's strength is in the minutiae and in her close reading. This is what Atwood scholarship needs now, and Nischik provides a strong framework for anyone interested in Atwood scholarship, whether one is just starting out or an experienced scholar.” – Jill E. Anderson, The Goose --- “Nischik offers a genuinely original take on established critical conversations about Atwood's writing. For the first time, Atwood's literary achievements are set alongside less familiar creative modes, providing a fuller picture of the author's creative history and offering fresh insight into her innovations across literary genres.” – Ellen McWilliams, Contemporary Women's Writing --- “Nischik charts a clear path through the development of Atwood’s career ... , confidently guiding its reader through an established canon.”  – Fiona Tolan, Canadian Literature ---  “Nischik is, like Atwood, an extremely prolific writer. Like Atwood too, she teases and tempts her readers to read on, offering suggestions and sources to guide them on their way.” – Nathalie Cooke, The Bull Calf --- “Nischik's study is meticulously researched and clearly written. ... [It] offers an innovative and exciting contribution to Atwood studies.” – Alice Ridout, The Review of English Studies}
