Zusammenfassung
The role model of the so-called Einheitsjurist dominates legal education in Germany. Every lawyer-to-be has to pass two State Examinations which are the basic requirement for access to any legal profession. Traditionally, the curriculum focuses primarily on German law. However, the key players increasingly recognise the importance of international elements. This is reflected partly in the core curriculum itself. While the State Examinations are administered centrally by the Federal States, a reform of 2002 has conferred some autonomy on the law faculties. Many of them have designed more or less internationally oriented areas of specialisation. To meet the demands of some employers, namely major law firms, a growing number of students pursue postgraduate studies at foreign law schools. Academic staff also reflects this tendency, with universities putting more emphasis on an internationally oriented scientific community.
