Zusammenfassung
From its classical foundations to the height of its conceptual refinement sociological theory has been strongly imprinted with the Enlightenment paradigm of modernity. This vision of modernity aimed at transcending boundaries and breaking down traditional barriers of rank and privilege to give way to the cosmopolis of free and equal individuals and to the public use of reason. Contrasted to universal reason and rationality, the manifolds of local traditions were to survive only in protected areas, as exotic entertainment for tourists, as pieces in museums, as matter for vacations and weekends. Religion, l’infâme in Voltaire’s famous phrasing, was to recede from a powerful public ritual practice and an encompassing worldview to a private concern of consolation for those who lagged behind the vanguard of the Enlightenment. Like local traditions, it was doomed to fade away.
