Zusammenfassung

Are welfare states and, specifically, the U.S. and Germany, becoming more similar; and what does that mean for their respective gender regimes? This paper looks at the gender regimes of the U.S. and Germany, and at recent trends in their social assistance policies, and proposes a framework for understanding these changes. I am looking at trends in policy-making within the welfare state. I concentrate on welfare state governments as political institutions because of the decisions they make about social assistance programs. Considering the changes under a framework of liberalization can tell us something about the trends in gender regimes.
