The question of how a cultural perspective informs the development of children’s self-regulation and social development remains somewhat neglected. In this chapter, we address this topic, emphasizing cultural influences in the socialization of emotion as they bear on the development of children’s self-regulation and therefore social behaviour. We share the view that individual differences in emotion regulation and social behaviour are best explained by a developmental psychological perspective that integrates cultural context into its account. We also emphasize early childhood as an important period during which to study this integrative perspective. To be successful in school and in life, young children must learn to engage in social behaviour that conforms to social standards. This behaviour requires a balance of children’s motivation to further one’s personal and relationship goals, which is achieved through skill at self-regulation. In particular, the self-regulation of emotion helps children engage in prosocial behaviour even when their personal and relationship goals conflict. The behavioural standards to which children must conform are often culturally specific. We emphasize the importance of early caregiving as a means of transmitting cultural values to children through socialization practices, and we consider caregivers’ naïve theories and socialization goals that may organize their practices as they strive to foster children’s social competence.
Our chapter has four sections. In the first section, we discuss the role of emotion and emotion regulation for social development. Second, we deal with caregivers’ socialization of child emotions and social behaviour, focusing on the role of self-regulation for social development. Third, we address the role of culture for the socialization of emotions, emotion regulation and social development. In the fourth section, we summarize our major points and suggest a cultural model of emotion regulation and social development. Finally, we offer suggestions for topics for future research.
