In this paper we ask for conditions influencing volunteering in social organizations as strongholds of social capital. Beside individual characteristics, contextual factors such as political, social, or economic settings are also taken into consideration to explain individual decisions to participate in voluntary organizations. The influences of individual and contextual level factors are tested simultaneously in several multi-level analyses. The results show that volunteering in social associations on the one hand is affected by individual characteristics and on the other hand by contextual factors such as a rural environment and institutional settings. In particular, both direct democracy and decentralization offering larger possibilities of participation facilitates volunteering in social organizations. The data for our analysis is taken from the Swiss Labor Force Survey (SLFS) and comprises over 54.000 respondents.
Zusammenfassung in einer weiteren Sprache
In unserem Beitrag fragen wir nach Bedingungen, welche das bürgerschaftliche Engagement in Freiwilligenorganisationen als Horte sozialen Kapitals beeinflussen. Neben individuellen Merkmalen stehen dabei vor allem die politischen, gesellschaftlichen und sozioökonomischen Rahmenbedingungen individueller Wahlhandlungen im Mittelpunkt des analytischen Interesses. Die Einflüsse der Individual- und der Kontextebene werden simultan in unterschiedlichen Mehrebenenmodellen geschätzt. Es wird deutlich, dass sich unbezahlte Tätigkeiten in Vereinigungen nicht allein auf individuelle Eigenschaften zurückführen lassen. Vielmehr stimulieren auch ländlich geprägte Gemeinwesen und Opportunitätsstrukturen politischer Mitsprache wie direktdemokratische Beteiligungsmöglichkeiten oder eine stark dezentralisierte staatliche Architektur das bürgerschaftliche Engagement in Freiwilligenorganisationen. Die Grundlage der empirischen Untersuchungen bilden Befragungsdaten der Schweizerischen Arbeitskräfteerhebung (SAKE) für das Jahr 2004. Diese Erhebung wurde bei 54251 Individuen durchgeführt, die sich auf die 26 Kantone verteilen.
