Zusammenfassung

By staging the province as a place of normality and authenticity that stands in contrast to an alienated metropolitan environment, Juli Zeh’s Über Menschen (2021) perpetuates traditional narratives of the critique of modernity. In the encounter between the protagonist, a newly arrived village resident, and the local “Dorf-Nazi” Zeh develops a programmatic ‘ethics of nonetheless’ that emphasizes the possibility of interpersonal understanding beyond ideological and political differences. However, this ‘ethics of nonetheless’ is, as I want to argue in this article, based on the ignorance of migrant voices and experiences.
