Zusammenfassung
Erik Didriksen’s Pop Sonnets (2015) are popular songs skilfully rewritten as sonnets. They creatively adapt Shakespeare’s Sonnets and transform their universal themes of love, morality, and truthful poetic writing. In English language teaching, they encourage critical and creative approaches which help learners to build multiliteracies, thereby fostering their understanding of the Shakespearean sonnet form, its early modern traditions as well as its creative adaptations and transformations in our times. The aim of this chapter is threefold: to delineate the adaptations and modifications of Shakespeare’s Sonnets as presented in Erik Didriksen’s Pop Sonnets; to enquire into the specific type of intermediality they display; and to discuss suitable approaches in English language teaching, which allow pupils to form a personal, yet informed understanding of the poetic traditions of the Shakespearean sonnet form, its continuations, and transformations.
