On the basis of a qualitative content analysis of the parliamentary debates on the party financing scandal of the German Christian Democratic Party and its leader ex-Chancellor Kohl in the 90 s the present paper tries to unravel some difficulties associated with the notion of political corruption. Following a bottom-up approach we examine the argumentations of the MP s, but also of Kohl, with the goal of establishing patterns of perception that account for the political-cultural embeddedness of corrupt conduct. The systematic reconstruction of the political argumentations/patterns is followed by a theory-based examination of what the former mean regarding an empirically saturated notion of political corruption. Trying to come to grips with the elusiveness of the phenomenon we thereby pinpoint certain problematic aspects that characterise the current definitions of this notion associated with party funding.
