Zusammenfassung

Volksgemeinschaft was the Nazis’ social utopia, which they set out to realize by any means available to them: by bureaucratic practice, by individualized calls to action, by providing opportunities for advancement, by violence, and by murder. Though a collective vision, it was directed at the individual and unleashed an enormous dynamism which gave social change a particular direction. For research the Volksgemeinschaft concept provides a key to open up the social history of Nazi Germany in a differentiated manner. The introduction sets out the topic of the volume, presents avenues of recent research, surveys the debate which unfolded internationally among historians about the usefulness of the approach, and suggests a model for grasping the dimensions and the functions of the Volksgemeinschaft concept during National Socialism.
