Zusammenfassung

The short story is arguably the flagship genre of Anglo-Canadian literature. It has attracted the country's most accomplished contemporary writers, among them Margaret Atwood, Alice Munro, Mavis Gallant, and Clark Blaise. Yet in contrast to the popularity of and achievements in the genre, surprisingly little literary criticism has so far been devoted to the Canadian short story. This collection redresses that imbalance by providing critical interpretations of twenty-eight well-known and often-anthologized Canadian short stories from the genre's beginnings in the 19th century through its first flowering in the modernist period to the late 20th century. A historical survey of the genre introduces the volume and a timeline comparing its development in Canada, the United States, and Britain, together with a bibliography, completes it.
