kops.description.abstractThe Cena Nasidieni (sat. 2,8), in which Horace resigns from writing of satires, is both a text about eating and a text about composing poetry. The paper brings into focus the complex link between these two elements and analyses it at various levels: the level of action within the text, the metaliterary level of aesthetics and the extratextual social and political level. In the text, processes of exclusion and integration are staged in multiple ways, which set Nasidienus and the literary persona ‘Horace’ into relation as if in a distorting mirror; by examining these processes, it is possible to make clear how Horace engages with his role as up-and-coming poet in an era of transition in the interacting fields of aesthetics, morals and power. The Satires of Horace are thus shown to be texts of political and social change which, at a very early moment in time, hint at the generation and establishment of elites that, in clear distinction from the recruitment mechanisms of the old Roman senatorial aristocracy, define themselves through personal proximity to the imperial household, but also through the aestheticisation, literarisation and intellectualisation of private life and style.deu
