Zusammenfassung
What is meaning? What are the properties of semantic knowledge? How does the discipline of Formal Semantics help us uncover semantic knowledge? This talk gives an overview of the goals of the semantic enterprise, both at the level of defining the building blocks of meaning and at the level of designing an algorithmic procedure that combines those meaning units in a systematic way. Special attention will be paid to the relation between semantics and syntax, on the one hand, and semantics and pragmatics, on the other, areas in which a lot of progress has been made in the last decade. Case studies will be provided to illustrate on-going debates in the syntax- semantic interface – e.g. direct compositionality vs. Logical Form – and recent developments in Formal Pragmatics and in the semantics-pragmatics interface – e.g. epistemic bias in information-seeking questions, the rise of anti-presuppositions.
